Bước 1: Đầu tiên, hãy tắt tất cả thiết bị điện trên cả 2 xe trước khi câu bình. Chuyển khóa điện về chế độ OFF để đảm bảo an toàn. Sau đó sử dụng dây câu màu đỏ hoặc đen(màu sắc để tránh nhầm lẫn) nối cực dương (+) của ắc quy hết điện với cực dương (+) của ắc quy cho. Bước 2: Sử dụng dây câu màu đen (màu sắc để tránh nhầm lẫn) nối cực âm (-) của ắc quy mồi với bất kì thành phần kim loại (không bị sơn bao phủ) nào trong khoang động cơ của xe có ắc quy hết điện như: khung xe, vỏ…. Tuyệt đối không nên nối vào cực âm (-) của bình ắc quy hết điện điều này có thể gây ra hiện tượng đánh lửa và gây cháy nổ. Bước 3: Khởi động xe có bình ắc quy mồi để nổ máy 3-5 phút sau đó mới nổ máy xe có bình ắc quy hết điện. Để cả 2 xe nổ máy khoảng 3 phút trước khi tháo các đầu cáp dây câu. Nếu như xe không khởi động được các bạn hãy cố gắng đợi thêm vài phút sau đó tiếp tục đề lại máy cho tới khi xe khởi động trở lại được. Bước 4: Sau khi xe đã khởi động được tài xế tiến hành tháo cáp dây câu theo trình tự ngược lại lúc đấu nối (tháo cực âm trước).
